Hayes Press: Golden Bells Calendar

Golden Bells is written to encourage devotional thought. It was this desire that caused Thomas Ken (1674-1711) to write hymns for his boys' class to sing morning, noon and night, the last verse of which always included these words:
Praise God from whom all blessings flow.
Praise Him all creatures here below.
Praise Him above ye heavenly host.
Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost.
It is our prayer that this daily calendar feed may prompt like expression of praise and adoration to our loving God.

And those deputies provided for
King Solomon and all who came
to King Solomon's table, each in
his month; they left nothing lacking.
1 Kings 4:27 (NASB)
2 Timothy 4
Twelve faithful officials provided for the thousands who came to Solomon's table on a regular basis for the forty years of his reign and there was never a meal nor fodder for the animals lacking. High praise for those deputies was well-deserved! We too as servants of our King attend His table. High praise will resound in eternity for those who allow nothing to be lacking there, either for saints or for the King!

You prepare a table before me in
the presence of my enemies
Psalm 23:5
2 Timothy 3
No one sits down and has a banquet when armed for battle and ready to defend. No one, that is, besides the One who has secured and guaranteed the victory before a sword is ever drawn! Our Shepherd makes a feast for us with all the trimmings, with no panic, while the enemy lurks about waiting to attack. And we are safe and secure in Him; for the One who is our Shepherd is the One who is our Saviour!

I am my beloved's, and my beloved is
mine. He feeds his flock among the lilies.
Song of Solomon 6:3
2 Timothy 2
This is a relationship steeped in love. The beloved may be the king, but he is more than that to the Shulamite woman. He may be a shepherd, but he is more than that to her. He is everything to her; he gives her life meaning and value and beauty. She knows his every step, his favorite pastures. She waits upon his every breath. Does that describe our intimacy with the One who is our Shepherd, our King?

"Why do you sleep? Rise and pray,
lest you enter into temptation."
Luke 22:46
2 Timothy 1
We can often be lulled into our own comfort zone and neglect the essential exercise of vigilance in prayer. Temptation may not always be about fleshly desires which war against the soul, but also about the threat of unbelief, which is every bit as real. The disciples were about to experience deep temptation to flee from their Master and save themselves. The irony is that in fleeing to their master, He would save them! The same is true today.

"Oh, that you would bless me indeed...
and that you would keep me from evil"
1 Chronicles 4:10
1 Timothy 6
Sometimes we may feel spiritually impoverished. And the prayer of Jabez seems to echo the desires of our own hearts, "Oh, that you would bless me indeed." But the second request may be equally necessary for us, for the human heart is capable of sin in its many forms. And we are not capable on our own of refraining from evil, whether in thought or action. Praise the Lord that He is our helper!

What is your beloved more than another
beloved...my beloved is white and ruddy,
chief among ten thousand...yes, he is
altogether lovely.
Song of Solomon 5:9, 10, 16
1 Timothy 5
The crowd did not see the beauty of the beloved because they were not in love with him. But the Shulamite gazed on him with delight. He was pure, fresh, without spot, the best of the best and with no common feature! He was altogether lovely. It's the description of our Beloved who is not to be compared with anyone else. He is the chief among ten thousand and more. "And this is my friend" (v16)!

But the fruit of the Spirit is...
self-control...
Galatians 5:22, 23
1 Timothy 4
We are exhorted to exercise self-control by Peter in his second letter (1:6)-that's our part, and it's hard to do. But here only the Spirit's power can effect such mastery of self. No power of ours can stand against the previous list of fleshy lusts that war against the soul. Only the Spirit's control over us will keep us from stumbling. How good God is to us!
